Golden Bay is an area of idyllic beaches. The scenery is breathtaking and the activities
are boundless. As seen on the map, the Bay is
situated in the northwest corner of the South Island - an area somewhat
remote even for New Zealand. But it is still easy to get to by bus, car or
aeroplane.
Golden Bay is situated between two national parks - the
Kahurangi - famous for its secluded mountains, walking tracks and wildlife,
and the Abel Tasman - even more famous for its warm scenic beaches and
opportunities for walking, kayaking and boating.
The main commercial center in Golden Bay (pop: 5,000)
is the town of
Takaka which lies at the base of the beautiful Takaka Valley. All usual
services and supplies can be purchased in town. There is a great range
of restaurants, bars and country pubs featuring live entertainment, art
galleries and studios. There is even a movie theatre.
Golden Bay is a place where the mind must communicate
with the spirit. Relax on the beach listening to the gentle waves and
shore birds during the day. In the evening, follow the rotation of the
southern skies through the clear air. Here
there is a complete
sense of peace.
